Hugh Stewart was born in 1784 in eastern PA. He
appears in the Jefferson County, PA, censuses in 1850 and 1860, with his wife, Anne (Steele) Stewart. Anne was the daughter of David and Margaret Steele,
also residents of Jefferson County.
In 1813, he joined other area men and signed up for a six month tour of duty with the Army of the Northwest in the 147th PA Militia Regiment, serving for the time
period of May thru November of that year.
Hugh and Anne had 3 known children, a son John, a daughter Rebecca Anne who married Joel Haight, and another son whose name is unknown.
Anne (Steele) Stewart died in 1867, several years after the death of Hugh Stewart. Both are buried in the Roseville-Bethel Cemetery in Union Township,
Jefferson County. In May 2009, a military tombstone to honor the service of Hugh Stewart in the War of 1812, was placed by their great-great-great-grandson
and his wife, Chandler and Ruthanne Hayes Haight.
