Henry P. Beer was born in Clarion County on April 26, 1836, a son of John and Mary (Hetrick) Beer. He married
Rebecca Gilbert on January 12, 1860, with J. B. Graham, J. P., officiating. The ceremony was at the home of her parents, Jonas and Mary (Hart) Gilbert, located in Eldred
Township, Jefferson County. Rebecca was born December 16, 1838, near Pottsville, Schuylkill County, PA. Henry P. listed his occupation as lumberman when he was drafted
into the military October 4th, 1864, to serve for a period of one year. He served as a Private in Company B, 57th Regt PA Vol. Infantry until honorably discharged on June 29,
1865, mustering out at New Washington, PA. He received a military pension due to a chronic eye disease, a wound of right hand, and a permanent leg injury sustained in rolling a
log up a hill, while they were building a small fort.
Rebecca and Henry P. were the parents of 5 children: Mary, born Nov. 1st, 1860; William, born Feb. 2, 1862; Alice, born
Aug. 14, 1868; Martha, born Jan. 30, 1872; and Charles, born Oct. 19, 1874.
At the time of his death, Henry P. owned 64 acres of land in Eldred Township, Jefferson County,
PA, one horse and one cow, for a total assessment value of $685. He died May 30, 1907, at his home, and was buried in Mt. Tabor Cemetery, near Sigel, PA. Rebecca died on July 20, 1917,
and is buried beside her husband.
