JEFFERSON S. BARBER

Jefferson S. Barber was the third child in a family of twelve children of Anthony M. and Hannah (Carpenter) Barber. He was born in Chemung County, New York, on October 8, 1831 and came to Jefferson County in 1852. Of his ancestral lines, the Barbers were from Rhode Island and the Carpenters from Long Island. His maternal grandfather was Alsap Carpenter. In 1853, Mr. Barber married Rachel Matthews, daughter of John Matthews, the third settler in Knox Township, Jefferson County. They were the parents of four sons and four daughters. During the Civil War, he served in Co F, 18th U.S. Infantry and has a military tombstone on his grave in the old Brookville Cemetery..
