Benjamin Haight, Jr., was born in New Caanan, CT, on December 24, 1769, the son of Benjamin and Elizabeth Haight, Sr. His ancestor, Simon Hoyte was born in Somerset, England, and came
to America in 1629, arriving on April 5th in Salem, Massachusetts. The family then migrated to Connecticut, where several generations made their home in Stamford, later
moving to Westchester County, NY. The name as undergone various spelling changes, including Hoyte, Hoyt, Hait, Hayett and Haight, and has descendants scattered from the East coast to the state of Washington.
Benjamin, Haight, Jr., and Phoebe Ruff, born 1776, were married in July 1794, in Westchester Co., and became the parents of five children. Their children were James, Amanda, Nelson,
Joel and Ambrose. Benjamin, Jr., served his country as a soldier in the 1 NY Militia in the War of 1812.
The family later moved to Jefferson County, PA.
Benjamin Haight, Jr., died August 28, 1843, and is buried in the Wing Family Cemetery on the old Wing farm. Phoebe died January 18, 1849, and is buried beside her husband.
A descendant of Benjamin and Phoebe Haight has arranged in 2007, for a military tombstone to be set on their gravesite.
