John White was born in Ireland in 1831, the son of Joseph and Jane White. He came to America with his parents in 1850, at the age of 15 years, landing in Philadelphia.
The White family came to Union Township, where he lived till 1859, when he purchased the farm in Eldred Township which was his home for the rest of his life. In 1858, he married Mary Stewart
and they were the parents of six children. Among their children were Mrs. W. H. Schnepp; Mrs. Harry Simpson of Union Township, William S. of Union Township, John J. of Jackson, Mississippi,
and David L. who remained in Eldred Township.
John's wife, Mary, was born in 1849 and died in 1888. About 1895, he remarried to Mrs.
Margaret Dykes, also of Eldred Township, who died in 1916.
Mr. White died on 30 May 1920, at his home following a stroke, and was buried beside his first
wife in the Mt. Tabor Cemetery in Eldred Township, Jefferson County, PA
