Tombstone of the Month

Thomas Mabon

His obituary states he was born on the banks of the river Tweed in Scotland on March 14, 1792, and came to America with his parents at the age of 18 months.  The Mabon family were pioneers in western Pennsylvania with the very earliest settlers.  They established a home, first in Armstrong County, then in Indiana County where Thomas grew up.  He came to Brookville in 1846, becoming one of the first lumbermen, and went into this business with Philip Taylor.  Later he built a grist mill which he operated for 15 years.

He was married to Jane Dick, from Ireland.  Their family consisted of 12 children, 8 of the children dying before the parents.   Thomas Mabon died November 5, 1883, and is buried with his wife in Brookville Cemetery, Brookville, PA.
