Joseph Zimmerman was born in 1845 in Emerickville, Jefferson County, PA, the son of Joseph K. and Mary Esther (Hess) Zimmerman.
His family was of German lineage and had settled in Schuylkill County prior to their coming to western Pennsylvania. In 1845, Joseph K. purchased land for a farm in Pine Creek
Township, and began the Zimmerman family in what is now the Emerickville area.
On June 21, 1865, the local newspaper listed his marriage on June 19, of that year to Hettie
Esther Mottern, a daughter of Levi George Mottern and Elizabeth (Bussard) Mottern. She was born in Northumberland County, PA, on August 4, 1844. Her family had settled in
Ringgold Township about 1850 along with other families of German lineage from that eastern county.
Joseph and Hettie were the parents of ten
children, many of whose descendants are still residents of Pine Creek Township. Their children included Mary Jane, Charles William, Blance C., Sarah Katherine, William S., Daniel A., Lydia, Minnie
Lavina, Foster J., and James Snyder.
Joseph Zimmerman died 1917, and was buried beside Hettie, who had preceded him in death in 1900. They are both buried in the Lutheran Cemetery at Emerickville, on land which was once part of
the original Zimmerman homestead that was purchased by Joseph K. Zimmerman in 1845.
